Marker lights

okay picked up a couple of used marker lights fairly cheap. the one is nearly pristine except the 6 layers of paint and the lens looks like it was sand blasted. is it possible to get just the lens, not the lens housing but just the actual clear plastic lens? Already have it all apart.

You can shop for the lens or the door assembly. They both pop up from time to time. A good place to shop is Saturn Surplus and Midwest Military.

If you intend to add turn signals then consider just buying the late model M151 style door assembly with the amber round lens.

Brian Asbury had them in stock and he is the one in Milton Ontario. they are also reasonably priced, and you don't have to worry about duty. send him an e-mail (he is the one who responded to your Steering wheel puller problem.

Thanks for the info. I am actualy thinking about adding a seperate magnetic set for turn signals. haven't actualy decided yet though.

if you are thinking of a second set of lights, and you are looking for Canadian Army look, I am told that at some point, the Canadian units had the second set of BO lights on the fenders to serve as signals. Again, converse with Brian as he is well versed with Canadian units and their wiring.

I will have to look into that.
I was cleaning the one light up last night, it has 12 distinct layers of paint on it

. Thats alot of repaints. It goes light olive, dark olive, brown, olive, olive, olive, pink(primer), olive, pink, olive, light grey, olive. There may or may not have ben another coat of alive on top. Interestingly, the main housing behind the bolt has 24V in yellow paint.

I was looking through Wes's photos and spotted a rather interesting one. it shows a marker light mounted outback beside the stop light for use as a turn signal. not sure how that would look but I may take that route, it also suggests mounting a set on the fender may have been done as well. Thoughts? opinions?

That small lamp above the left rear main tail light assembly is actually not a marker light. It has the correct rearward facing Red BO Stop Lamp graphics. It was used by the military when a military turn signal setup was added to the earlier wired jeeps. They would add the second left hand light on the right to give a service rear brake/turn lamp and a service rear red tail lamp moving the BO stop function to that small add-on bullet lamp.

It is most interesting how the marker light's display
enabled the observers in the leading and following
vehicles to judge the distances between the vehicles.
Perhaps someone has a link to this information. Mine
is gone.

Several of the manuals have the illustrated views of the BO lights at various distances. I used to have a good illustration on my old photo web site but alas that is history. I'll see what I can locate. In the mean time check these:

how many different inserts were there for these markers?
I got the turtle wax headlight lens restorer at CT for $13 and used it on one of my marker lenses. It does a remarkable job to be honest. I would have to take this down a bit farther than I am willing to get it 100% but it is a good 95% compared to the about 50% it was before. if the lens didn't have such deep pitting it would look new I think.
Does anyone have a picture of an m38 with the fender mounted signals? I have been looking around without success. My wife accuses me of being blind alot though

Take a look at "cacti ken's" album, he mounted a set of
fixtures under the fenders. Functional but out of the way..

After some experience in manuvering in terain with gullies and ditches I found out it that it was not a good idea to mount the fixture under the fender. With the action of the springs allowing the tire to go up, the tire will come in contact with the fixture and knock it off its' mounting.
Drive and Learn. It happened in October at the Ft. Hood Rally.

Everybody tries to get inventive and fight the simple solution to adding turn signals to the front.

I have always just swapped the single filament lamp and socket in the stock BO marker light assembly with a dual filament lamp and socket. Works great. There's no added bug eyed fixtures sticking out anywhere on the front of the jeep.

If I do anything else to have turn signals in the front I will do the dual filament thing.
