F134 clock symbol prior to casting #

I noticed on one of my F134 blocks instead of an SD as seen on other blocks SD was replaced with an 18 followed by a clock symbol prior to the 807895 casting #. So I looked through pictures and did some reading here and other jeep forums with no luck. I didnt find any reference of this being on F134 engines whether civy or military. I only saw it described on L134 motors for example in Wes's pictures. Anyone have any info about it I might have missed? Unfortunatly the serial # is missing to help. It caught my eye since it is a differenet from anything I have seen before on a F134 block. I will post a picture as soon as I can

What is the date code on your block for the casting?

The clock symbols were often used for shifts and sometimes dates in many foundrys.

I don't remember seeing a clock marking for the block on the WO blue prints for the F head engines, but will check again.

Many times these were foundry markings for internal quality control.

Here is a picture of what I was talking about. Not the greatest but you can see the symbol. Not to sure what the date code is. Are you talking about what isright under the symbol as seen on the L134 engines? If so this is not present on my block.

The clock was a early only item. Try to remember that F134 started out in the the 1950 Jeepster so there are F134's with clock marks just like the L134's had up till about 51.

And that is where I was a bit confused. I knew the F134 engine came out early on in the 50s but I thought the 807895 casting # was later on in the 50s?

WO was slow to change part numbers on the blocks.

The L134 had changes in the castings, but the cast part number did not change until mid 1952 when an entire new blue print was made.

The switch in blocks changed earlier at around Dec 51 - Jan 52.

Wilson foundry was purchased by WO some years prior - I don't remember the exact date - will have to look it up again.

It appears that WO kept the management at Wilson foundry and so most of these smaller markings are most likely internal. Until or if the Wilson foundry documents show up, we may never know for sure.

On the L134 the date code is on the driver side toward the rear of the block just above the skirt where the oil pan mounts.

I knew that L134s had the date stamped in that location but didnt but two and two together when I read your post :oops: Thanks for the information. I like all the little tidbits of information you can learn. I am still wondering though why my F134 block has a clock symbol which is early 50s as you and Wes have said and a casting # that is from the late 50s as I have read from previous posts here. If it were an early F134 block wouldnt it have a casting # for example 646228-11-13-D-AR?

I have not studied the F134 as much as Wes and others have.

I will have to defer to Wes. I have spent more time studying the L134.


Date cast code on the L134 - C = 1951, D = 1952

Example: 2/1C - Feb 1, 1951

Yes the 646228 is the first F134 and the M38A1's came with them in 1952. Oddly the 646228 casting did not have the clock.

Thanks for the reply. Its a good block and I plan on using it so if someone knows what they are looking at they will see it. Not sure if this makes a difference but the jeep came out of Greece when we purchased it. I dont know much about the jeep to help since the data plates are missing. I do know the hood # since it was stamped on the frame but it definitly has recieved many replacement parts as any jeep would from evidence I have found while taking it apart such as the rear axle. It has a date stamp of 67. Another question if you dont mind. I know this is not the original motor so was WO suppling motors to Greece or were they getting their supplies from another source? Sorry if I am digging into the weeds here I just want to learn as much as I can if the info is available.

To date all of the military surplus M38 and M38A1's out of Greece that have showed up in Europe and the US have had nothing but Willys built engines. There's no evidence at all to support a foreign engine suplier and with Greece being a member of Nato they had access to military depot rebuilds as well.
