Radiator Question

Post by army_inc »

Hey Guys,
THis may seem like a dumb question, but I've now seen a few M38A1's with L head engines in them. It seems as if the radiator was different between the L head and F head engine. I'm just going for a motor pool restoration so I'm wondering if a L head radiator is the same as the F head and if they are interchangeable with mounting brackets etc... Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They are not the same - they have different part numbers (clue #1), and the inlet port is near the center of the top tank on the F-head and over toward the driver's side on the L-head, plus the shape of the top tank is different. Sorry, can't help you with the comparison of overall size and mounting, as I have only the latter.

Thanks Jimm. THat's all I needed as I've been offered one but it was in an M38A1 with an L Head engine. I just wasn't sure if there was a difference or not. THanks again. :D

L-head engines were not standard in M38A1's, that is a bubba conversion. Sure they will fit but the M38A1 was developed to use the more powerful and taller engine, why go back?

I'm not trying to go back to an L head. I'm just trying to find a radiator that is local that works for the F head. This guy just had one from an L head engine. I just wasn't sure if it would work or not that's all.
