Mirror arm

Post by jeepers52 »

Hello all,
I am trying to find the right mirror arm for a late production M38. And I was told there are two different styles. One that is like the ones on the MBs and GPWs and a later version without the set bolt. Anyone know if this is true and if you have a picture to share, I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you for your help, this web site is such a great resource of information.

This is an often asked question and there are several threads you can search for both here and on the G503 board that will give you many answers and most will swear their answer is the right one.

You should start with the ORD 9 for the M38. The early and late ORD 9's (1951 and 1955). Note in both ORD 9's there are two mirror assemblies listed. One is the early with the early Willys part number A11850 (head only) and the other is late with both a Willys PN 673545 and a Army hardware stock number H017-0547202 (Head & arm Assy). Note that these two mirrors are listed exactly the same way in the M38A1 ORD 9 dated 1956.

The arm entries can be very confusing. Note that there are really only 3 complete adjustable assemblies PN's WO 119079 ORD# 547250(Early) then two later units with WO 120074 which supersedes 119079 and can also be used with the late mirror assy and arm WO 120276 which was originally used with the late mirror assy.

The early mirror head is smaller then the late 5 1/2" head.

The original early adjustable arm was adjustable from 8" to 11" and the late arms were adjustable from 8" to 11 1/2".

For some odd reason the M38A1 ORD 9 does not list the two later arm assy's.

Finally we still need a changeover date from early to late.
