mismatched VIN #

Post by DUMAS »

I just took possession of a beautiful off frame restoration 1947 Wiily's CJ2-A.
Bought it in West Virginia and brought home to Ohio. Found all three ID plates and they match, however the # on the title does not match ! BMV naturally issued no title  I am new at this.....any ideas for a cure.
I have feelers out to OSP and a couple of car dealers hoping for a solution.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Kansas and Texas will issue you a title with a signed bill of sale from the owner on vehicles over 25 years old- as long as the VIN clears the data base for stolen vehicles.

Check you DMV. Maybe bring donuts with you.

I know there are places in Oklahoma, Tennesee where you can do this and then bring the title back to your home state.

Vermont will issue an out of state registration (not a title) for vehicles older that 20 years on the bill of sale. I did this, got the registration and plates, and a letter from the vermont DMV stating they do not title older vehicles, took it to the SC DMV and got the SC title with no problem. I told the Vermont DMV what I was doing and they were fine with helping. They ran the VIN throught the computers and got it into the interstate registration system. SC doesn't like old vehicles without titles.

new VIN

Post by DUMAS »

Hey guys,
thanks for the response, being a newbie I didn't figure this stuff happens a lot with 60-70 year old vehicles!.I was advised to go to the Kaiser Willys' site and order a replacement VIN tag, go to a local trophy shop and have the title number Stamped on it, then have the jeep inspected. A friend who is OSP (who does the inspections) said that was kosher, enabling me to get an Ohio title.Going to give it a shot, many thanks again

I'd look into what the DMV would say first on the advise that was given above. If all those plates are original I'd want to keep them in place. Doing what you are saying sounds a little backward. I'd hate to have that bite back in the future.

VIN

Post by DUMAS »

Thanks for response. The guy in West Virginia i bought it from said the same thing, WV won't title any vehicle over 10 years old so when he bought it post restoration all he needed was a valid, notarized bill of sale*(which he offered to send me) but OHIO is annal in many things, this being one. It has to have matching numbers on the frame/data plate and title.THAT is when my trooper friend suggested the 'end run' using the data plate with the title number on it.
he also admonished me to Not discard nor trifle with the original plates.
I ordered the new data plate and will see what develops while waiting for it.
Ohio doesn't make it easy.

They may call that an "End run" in Ohio but in most states that is illegal.

The reason I asked you what the number was on the title was to determine if that number was an old derived number by another state's DMV. ,So I ask again what is the serial number on the title?
