How to identify M38/M38A1 doors?

Post by jeeperjoe »

Titles says it all. Can someone tell me how you can tell M38 and M38A1 doors apart? Also how to tell commercially made doors from military ones? We need a good door identification FAQ!

I'm looking for M38A1 doors. (hint! hint!)

BTW do any of the TMs cover the complete top and it's installation? I have four manuals and none of them show the complete top, side curtains and doors!

The M38 and the A1 have different windshield angles.

The M38 was shipped from Willys with the full top in it's stowed position. The M38A1 was not shipped with doors or side curtains or the hardware for them\. There is a separate kit and drawing for that.

Always peruse my photo album when you have questions like these. A picture is worth a thousand words. they say. I have hundreds of technical photos there.

This sub-album will be of particular interest to you!

If you then open my sub album on the M38 you can easily see the different way the bottom half of the front edge of the door attaches to the tub.

Wes,

As a matter of fact, I have been looking at your pictures and I've found a lot of information there but nothing about the M38A1 doors. That's why I asked in the forum. I did find pictures of the M38 door frame in the sub-album that you pointed out but NOTHING for the M38A1 so I still don't know what the differences are! That's also why I asked if there was a manual for the tops. Or anything that shows pictures! I find lots of pictures of the summer top on the net but FEW showing the side curtains and doors and no great detail in any of them. Also still unanswered, are the civilian made door frames the same as the military ones or not? Yes? No? Sometimes? So far I've found THREE door frames with civilian cloth covers but I don't know if they may be military frames with civilian covers OR civilian made frames that are compatible with the military ones OR if they're totally different! And in one case the owner doesn't know if they're M38 or M38A1 and they're in another state and the owner's pictures aren't very good so I'm still trying to figure what they are! The owner SWEARS that they're M38 but they're also swearing that it fit a 1954 model!

If I knew that these frames are compatible with military tops I'd pick them up and pass them on to someone that could use them, even if they won't fit my M38A1.
