Clutch disc sizes

Post by Beacher425 »

Just did a clutch overhaul on an M38a1. Found 2 different sizes for the 8 1/2 inch clutch discs. One meets the specs of 8 1/2 inch outer diameter and a 5 1/8 inch inner face diameter giving a contact surface of about 1 11/16 inch. This matches the contact serface width of the pressure plate. I got a new disc recently that measures 8 1/2 in outer diameter, 5 3/4 inch inner face diameter giving a contact surface of about 1 5/16 inch. This is 3/8 inch smaller than the contact surface of the pressure plate. I noticed that in the ORD 9 there are 3 different part numbers and descriptions listed; 804805, 802410, and 806424. Did I get a phoney disc with a smaller contact surface, or are they both acceptable?

Thanks!

Both Auburn (Dana) and Borgue & Beck made those clutch disc's. You probably have an aftermarket that fits several applications. As far as the L & F134 are concerned their flywheels are found in two configurations. 8 1/2" clutches and 9" clutches. Variations in width of friction material is not uncommon. As long as the center steel area of the disc fits properly in the recess of the flywheel and the opening of the pressure plate there shouldn't be any issue.

Thanks! I was hoping that the small difference in contact surface would not make any difference.
