Fuel Tank Sending Unit

Post by buzzshipman »

I have an M38 that I'm restoring for a guy and have a question about the fuel sending units. I'm converting this to 12 volt and was wondering if I can use an original sending unit for the gas tank. He bought a civilian tank so I know I can use that if I need to but I would like to put an original style tank in. I'm buying new gauges for 12 volt and I was wondering if I can just get a fuel gauge with correct ohm output to match an original sending unit. I don't see why this wouldn't work. Maybe I'm thinking wrong but I don't think the volts will matter as long as the ohm range is correct. Also does anyone know the ohm range of the original sending unit. I know what the civilian is but have never done a military so I don't know if they are different.

Thanks,
Kevin

The resistance ranges are not even close between the 24 volt system vs the 12 volt system. You are at a crossroad that several hundred before you were at and the choices are still the same. You must match the sender to the gauge if you wish the gauge to be accurate. Also some systems have the low resistance at the low end of the scale and some have the low resistance at the high end of the scale.
Our downloads page has your answers to specs on 24 volt sender:

Here's a couple 12 volt sources:

Thanks Wesk. The ohms reading is what I'm looking for. I know a lot of people have had this situation but doing a search didn't seem to come up with what I was looking for. I'm going to see what I can do. I have read that some also just got a civilian float even though it doesn't make it all the way to the bottom of the tank and you have to drill some holes to mount it. Just trying out some options that I have.
