solex carb for m38

please does anyone know if a solex carb (and how much does it cost) fits to my m38???? I read that a solex carb from cj3a is the same!!Is that possible???

It fits nice, i use the solex now for many years, rebuilding the orginal is still an option to do, but meanwhile the solex works great.

Yes they do make a Solex that can be fitted (adapted) to the M38 engine. You will have to also buy a 90 degree top inlet horn to adapt the carb to the air cleaner. Modification of the fuel plumbing and control linkage is also required. For the same money you can have your original Carter carb properly overhauled. The Solex offers no gains or improvements in performance over the Carter. It uses an odd enrichment system for starting which increases fuel feed instead of blocking off air as the Carter does. You will find very little parts and service support for them outside India where they are built.

If you still feel the urge to but one then I would advise buying one from a proper distributor/retail sales outlet so you have some warranty recourse. Ebay is a buy at your own risk and that auction you linked is not offering any savings over any other standard retail outfit.

Make sure you purchase the correct model Solex by verifying it's actual Part number M32PBIC.

the point that i want to put a carter is that i have some problems with original.My m38 starts ok and runs ok in low RPM ,but when accelerate in high RPM's then it missfiers.(that was the description of a friend of mine that has done all the restoration and the m38 is still in his garage that's why i can not have personal experience to say what exactly it happens)He said to me that he put another carb original and goes well,but that carb is from another m38 and is not selling!!!To find here in greece another m38 carb is very dificult!!!!!Also he said that n my carb had put the repair carb kit (all the parts inside are new) and can't overhauled!!!Any ideas where can i overhauled there????

To troubleshoot the problem remotely over this median would not be easy to do. A better description of what was actually done to the carb would help. For example:
1- was a new modern kit that used modern rubber materials used? Old military NOS kits are not a good choice.

2- was the carb's passageway plugs removed and thoroughly cleaned and flushed? The better equipped kits include new passageway plugs.

3- When the carb was re-assembled was care taken to get all parts back in their correct positions? I ask this because the tech manual illustration shows the metering rod spring in the wrong location relative to the metering rod diaphragm. The correct location is shown in this illustration:

The spring I refer to is item BB. Also item HH Discharge Check ball is often overlooked. The metering rods (item CC) differ between the M38 and the M38A1 carb and their part numbers are on them.

4- Was the float height set at 1/4"?

Did the jeep run poorly before the carb was rebuilt?
