San Juan hood fitment....

Post by Jordan »

Had to purchase a San Juan replacement hood for my M-38. I've got a pretty good gap at the back end of the hood (where it hinges). Basically, it seems too high at the rear. I can peer into the engine compartment looking over the dash in the gab between the hood and the dash cowl. Its a gap about a 1/4" high. Is this normal?

Only fix I can see is to unbolt the hood and grind out the holes on the piano hinge tab on the hood itself.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I thought those San Juan replacements parts were supposed to be perfect.

Do you mean MD Juan? I never heard of San Juan body part. I don't think 1/4" is too bad, that's about where mine sits and at the turns where it curves down to the fenders, it's about 1/2".

I've got a gap between my hood and cowl and it looks normal, especially for the age and type of vehicle. You can check out my jeep in the web gallery.

it also depends on whether or not it is a new made hood or an older one that was sitting in stock. the new ones are more accurate the older ones were out unless mounted to their tub.

I must have gotten 1 of the older ones. It is a full 1/2" narrower
at the cowl than stock. I didn't realize this until AFTER I stripped
the shipping primer and painted it :x I'll notch the hat at the radius
and spread it so it doesn't rub the cowl, weld and repaint. This
is why I've waited so long to re-apply my hood #s.
keep 'em rollin'

Whoops. I meant MD Juan. Thanks for the photo. That give me a good benchmark.

Thanks,

Brett:

You do very nice work. Makes me embarrassed to show my photos. Think I'll just keep 'em to myself!
