T90 transmission assembly

Post by bl5211a »

OK - so i have a question on assembly sequence. I was following TM98015-2 manual. It had me install reverse gear, then cluster gear, then input gear. However, i am not able to get input gear assy into position with the cluster gear assembly in place? Is the manual assembly sequence incorrect? looks like i need to drop the cluster to get the input in?

The sequence is correct as listed. You were suppose to leave the cluster gear assy lying in the bottom of tranny while the other gears are installed. The cluster gear is lifted later on and then the cluster shaft is installed.

Grover's T90 rebuild guide on Willys Tech is not available right now cause Willys tech is moving to a new server. Novak's guide is available. Try using it in conjunction with the TM 9-8015-2.

does it need to be lifted up after main gear cluster is in or can it be lifted up after input shaft gear assembly but before main gear assembly?

The link looks like it may be last which could be very tricky..

All the main shaft and input needs to be in first before you lift the cluster gear with dummy shaft and thrust washers. That includes the oil slinger. When you put the cluster shaft in from the rear, orient the cutout for the locking plate as close as you can, the shaft doesn't turn very easy when it's all the way in.

Hey Wes - THis worked perfect. One question, how important is it to have the syncro claw springs opposing? I have the trans all back together and i am not 100% sure i have the syncro springs opposite..oh boy..

Do you have the tranny mounted back up the tcase and sealed up?
It's really not too hard to pull the output shaft/synchro assembly back out.

No, you can fish the output shaft out the back end. Its makes it easier to move the 2/3 shift collar fore or aft (i cant remember which way). But it will come out. The roller bearings in the input shaft may fall out but you can do it carefully to avoid this, I'm sure you are familiar with them.

Hello Bretto: Your suggestion worked perfect. It turned out that the synchro springs were not opposing, so turned the forward one around. Thanks again and your tip to move 1st/second gear slider forward was perfect.

Wes - also thanks for the link.

Now i need to reassemble the transmission top plate or shifter control. Any tips is greatly appreciated.

if you have taken it right apart, watch the indent when putting it back together, if it is facing wrong it will get stuck, if it does grab it with vice grips and spin it, take apart and try again.
