So, haven't been on here in awhile, but I need some help

Post by Deadguy »

I just recently got my engine back from the rebuilder, and in the jeep. It's making a clacking noise, whereas before my engine made none. I'll bring that up with the rebuilder, but my real reason for posting is that I finally pulled my speedometer drive gear in an attempt to figure out my high mileage problem. Wes suggested that the gear might be backwards on the shaft. But the gear I pulled out doesn't look like the military version in my TM. It's scored as well. This is the gear, and this is the ten spline shaft. If anyone has any advice, I am all ears.

The background to Dan's speeo problems can be read in these posts:

Jim showed the correct gears in his photo in this Oct 2012 post.

The bottom line in all of this is a bit confused from all the previous shotgun troubleshooting and incomplete troubleshooting steps that have led to many false assumptions.

Now that the last part is out in the open it is quite obvious the problem, all along, lie in the mismatch of parts. The next step now is to assemble the correct matching set of parts.
