Thermostat for m170/ m38a1

Post by bl5211a »

Hello: what temperature thermostat should I use in my 1955 m170? Store has 160 or 180. Looks like original design is 148 to 155. So, I was thinking 160...?

160 is a good choice for your neighborhood.

I put a 180deg TS in my L134 because I thought (there I go thinking again), that it was better to run a little hotter than cooler, that is if the cooling system is operating correctly which it appears to be.

I have worried a little about it since it does get hot here in Texas.
In my case, Would it be ok or even better for the engine if it had 160deg TS in it?

I put the 160 In since manual indicated a 155 opening. Its also a fail safe, meaning it will fail in open position. Jeep is still a couple years away from running, so i can not speak from experience yet..

The rule of thumb is 160 in warm climates and 180 in cool climates. In both cases a not so healthy cooling system can result in serious damage to the engine.
