Shims

After all is said and done, I realized that some of the parts I had left over included the shims shown here.I understand from various previous articles that they are to change the camber (caster?).

Question: Were these added by the previous owner to possibly correct a steering problem, or were they 'official' additions by the government?

The caster and camber angles were built in to the jeep and not meant to be adjustable. Toe was the only angle meant to be adjustable. Caster errors from damage can often be worked around by using tapered wedges between the spring and the axle housing. This is what I suspect was done with yours. Those wedges are also used when the jeep is lifted and one needs better drive shaft angles.

Thanks, Wes! Since it had extremely long shackles when I bought it, I assume that was the reason for the shims and the RS5000 steering damper. I've had NO problems since all the questionable steering parts were replaced when I rebuilt.

Been to several local car shows, won 'Peoples Choice' today at a local show, made me feel like it was all worth the effort. People really enjoy seeing the old war-horses (the Jeep, I mean, NOT me).

I think its nice to see something out of the norm at car shows (like our Jeeps). I am fairly new to the scene of shows but of the 4 I have been to, I have never seen anything military entered and only one tim,e one other Jeep but it was lifted and had 35" tires and whatnot.

The shows ARE enjoyable, but rewarding as well, makes it all worthwhile !

2 shows this weekend, One 'Peoples Choice' (left), and the bigger one is runner up (Truck category, no other category matched).

My actual FIRST EVER trophies of ANY kind!

His name is Bill Oleary, Shelton CT! I'm attempting to talk him into joining our happy group. A basic car lover, but flexible. At the present time, has never attended a MV show (That WILL change next summer)
