Hyphoid gear oils are not what goes in there. The new high sulpher GL-5 stuff can attack the brass bushings.

GL-2 or any of the old fashion straight weight gear oils will work. John Deer Corn head grease, Studabaker Internationals Fluid Grease, 600 weight Model A ford axle oil are just a few.

If the box was just overhauled you can just crack the cover loose and flush it then service with the correct straight weight gear oil.

I ordered the 600 weight Model A ford axle oil. In the meantime tho, I checked the website for the Lucas 85-140W gear oil I bought, and they say they specifically don't use sulpher and phosphorous as it is corrosive to "yellow metals".

I opened the MSDS sheet on Lucas 85w140 and guess what it says is in it!!!!????

#@$%@! I did all this internet research, and didn't see that. I was reading that the corrosiveness of these compounds kicks in at higher temperatures. You think it'll be fine for a few days while I wait for that 600 weight Model A ford axle oil?

Despite the issues with your jeep. I admire your willingness to drive to Hanover. Back roads are fine around there but interstate not so much!

Well, the goal is to make the vehicle reliable enough to take longer trips! At this point, the only things that have not been replaced or rebuilt are the Fuel pump, generator, radiator, starter (although I replaced the switch) and Distributor (which I replaced the points and condenser on). I didn't replace the axles, but they have new kingpin and wheel bearings, new shims, and I gave the gears a thorough look through. I was talking to John at Midwest Military, telling him everything I didn't replace broke down, and he said I should be good on the starter and generator. The fuel pump could probably use a rebuild, and the distributor could use bushings.
