Omix-Ada distributor install

Post by leecarr »

I installed an Omix-Ada electronic distributor in a 1946 CJ2A today and for the record the directions are wrong. The black wire with the + on it goes on the - terminal of the coil and the blue one with the - on it goes on the + terminal of the coil. The location of the plug wires is also different but no big deal. After fighting to get the old one out the installation was easy and it works fine, I also installed a new coil with a internal resistor.

Lee,

Just what kind of distributor did you get. A replacement for the small round civvy distributor with regular contact points in only has one wire and that one goes to the coil's - terminal. The + terminal on the coil gets the wire coming from the ignition switch.

Do you have a Pertronics pointless unit? That comes with two wires for the coil.

If #1 wire position is not in the normal place then the oil pump is not indexed correctly with #1 TDC on compression.

Generally when you remove a distributor you get #1 TDC on compression and don't move the engine again until after the distributor is back in.

I bought it from Walck's, I just assumed it was Omix-Ada. It is a 12v pointless unit. The engine was on # 1tdc and the engine was not moved and the shaft will only go in one way.The rotor will only go on one way which ends up being 180 out from the original, regardless of the oil pump indexing they would still be 180 out. If the crank and cam are timed correctly the oil pump indexing may not be by the book but as long as the distributor can be adjusted and the plug wires are oriented correctly and in the correct order it will run. This is much more critical with distributor driven by a hex shaft (learned the hard way).

My point on the set-up is the #1 plug wire being in the wrong position is not necessarily the fault of the new the distributor.
The location of the plug wires is also different but no big deal.
It can be caused by the incorrect indexing of the oil pump which drives the distributor or; If you are sure the engine was #1 TDC on compression and the rotor is pointing 180 deg opposite the old one that is because the upper section of drive plate and cam were installed 180 off to the drive tang's offset in one of the distributors and most likely it was in the old distributor. But as you said as long as it times ok no biggy.

Disclaimer: The wires are in the correct spot when you actually wire the coil the right way (not backwards, I didn't think I was that dumb). I didn't think a coil would work when wired backwards, but it ran just fine, switched them back anyway.
