speedo repair

Post by RICKG »

Anyone know of a reputable sppedo repair guy? Here locally there's no one who rebuilds the cable driven AC stuff. Then and Now auto referred me to
Dick Reynolds in Fla. Any other options? I know I can find a replacement if need be but I like the matching patina of my orig unit.

I downloaded TM9-1829 A. Almost 200 pg and it's easy to see the repair is WAY out of my league.

I just had Bob's Speedometer Service in Howell, MI repair my amp and temp gage for my M38. I assume based on his name that he does the spedometers also. Phone #810-632-0400

It's not as challenging as the manual makes it sound but it can often be called an art. Some special tooling needs pop up as well. Just google tachometer and speedometer rebuilding and gather up the list of those in your area and then canvas the auto/jeep restoration boards for anyone have any personal testimony to offer on any on your list. Those listed as aviation FAA certified repair stations would be very reliable but also very expensive.

Thx Bill, I went to their website and was impressed by photos of restored vintage instrument clusters. They claim to be a 3 generation family owned outfit that's been in business for 70 yrs or so. I'll give em a call tomorrow.

Rick,

Keep in mind that those early gauges with radium in their faces will be turned down for repair at most instrument shops.

I had all my gauges repaired by Bob's Speedometer back in 2008. They are a little pricey.

I agree with Ryan, a little pricey, but very nice work and very quick turn around. I sent them to him after another vendor turned them down for the reasons that Wes mentioned.
Wes I checked my email in my profile, it was correct but I reentered it. Hope that fixed it.

To follow up on this topic:
I made some calls to the shops recommended above and recommended
by other members. I was looking for ballpark worst case pricing. A
reasonable person knows you don't know what its gonna take till you
get into it and find out whats wrong. A guy has to get a feel for the
costs and decide whether to persue it or not and I'm sure the old adage
"you get what you pay for" applies here. To be sure I mentioned the
radium concern and none of the shops I talked to had a problem with it.

$375 MWM worst case scenario per John.

$275-350 Per Bruce @ Bob's speedo, Howell Mi.

$175 base rebuild with add $100 for odometer rebuild if needed
Per Dick @ Reynolds Speedo, Naples Fl.

$135 per Todd @ The Speedo Shop, Santee Ca.

This post is not intended as a barometer of quality of goods and services,
but simply an illustration of the wide range of "ballpark" prices offered.
