M38 batteries

Hi,

I was wondering what type of "over the counter" batteries I could purchase for my '51 M38? Walmart?

I will use these only to see if I can get the engine to run and check the electrical before I start the restoration.

The correct 2HN batteries are not cheap.


This chart will help you with your choices.

If the jeep is set up for 24 volts and has the stock 24 volt system then a couple of the 22NF's will work for you.

If the jeep has been converted to 12 volt then just use a single 24 series 12 volt battery and mount it on the under the hood tray.

Yes, it is 24 volts. I wasn't planning on getting the correct 2HN batteries yet and was just hoping to buy the least expensive ones to get me through the restoration.
I will look for 22NFs.

Am I correct in saying that 51Rs should work as well?

Yes. I have used 51R's before. As far as I can remember none of the civvy batteries will work with the battery trays and hold downs unless you modify them a bit.

On your question yesterday the tool box differs from the CJ's as far as the lid, hinges and catches and the two mount plates for the decontamination bottle. If your lid and hinges and catches are serviceable then a used civvy box can be made to work.
