Will this fuel tank work?

Post by southpw »

Need a fuel tank for my M38 as it came with an outboard motor tank and a copper line as a pick up. Will this fuel tank work? If so, what other components are needed to complete the fuel tank swap? Thanks
Can iassume that most parts listed as CJ2A and CJ3A are compatible? II'm looking at exhaust systems as well.

It is not the proper tank for an M38, I believe the cj2 and 3a have bottom fuel pickups, the m38 a top fuel pickup and filter. The neck size is different from the M38. I am sure you can make it work but it isn't the proper tank.

The correct m38 tanks are also available in reproduction at a relative price point. I would suggest sourcing one of those.

That is just what it is advertised as, a CJ2A, 3A or early 3B tank. It is too short, the filler pipe will not only not line up it will be too small in diameter to fill the hole in the tub side even if you build a platform to raise it up.
Can iassume that most parts listed as CJ2A and CJ3A are compatible?
No, that would really get you in trouble. You can usually determine what will interchange by simply referring to the parts manual for the model you want to compare parts with. The M38 & M38A1 parts manuals are free for you to download here on this site. The civvy parts manual you should pick up a copy of is the 1949 Willys Master Parts List. Covers Cj's, Jeepster, wagons & pickups 1945 thru about 1954. with current revisions.

Thank you all. This is why i asked. I don't necessarily need NOS but i do want to make sure correct reproduction parts are purchased for my restoration.
I will download the parts manual as it looks like it covers lots of the stuff I'm looking (needing) to buy.
