Hello : Could some one post or send me a couple pics of how the pipe comes out under the right rear of the M170 jeep. is it typical for the lifting hook to sit on flange of pipe?

They are close but they should not touch each other. You'll have to heat and bend a bit of the piping to get her to exit the rear in the right spot.

Tailpipe extension
On the M170, the tailpipe extension will be in the way of the lift ring. It is not a matter of bending, heating, or beating. The pipe and the shackle have interference.

I disagree John. We have had several members successfully bend the interference out by working the angles forward of the muffler. It's today's inaccurate repop pipes that cause the interference issue.
In Dave's photo below you can see the flange in it's proper position inboard of the shackle ring.

John, if you will notice the ring is resting against the fording pipe not the tailpipe!

Hello: Mine looks just like the photo but with lifting hook resting on flange instead of forward of flange. Its a m170 with all NOS pipes/ hangers..
I also found photos of the old system before disassembling and hook is to forward side of flanged and trapped. Again , not repop..My guess is a stack up of tolerance issues or design flaw of detailed exhaust parts for the m170.
Anyways, have not decided if i am going to modify or leave as is with hook resting on flange..

None of the above photos show the tail pipe outlet resting on the lift shackle ring or the lift shackle ring resting on the tailpipe outlet. The last photo shows the fording extension close to touching the back side of the shackle. The first two photo show very clearly that new from Willys/Kaiser there was no interference.
If your tail pipe outlet flange interferes with your shackle you need to re-bend or tweak the piping before or after the muffler to eliminate the conflict.

When I looked at that truck before Pizzo sent it to the museum the tailpipe flange was not against the shackle. The fording pipe flange is what causes the slightly forward tilt of the shackle. At any rate the flange belongs just where it is in the 2nd photo and I have made them fit there by tweaking the inaccurately formed repop pipes. Military surplus often included reject stock along with serviceable NOS and I often saw both side by side on the pallets during the old DRMO sales.
