L HEAD CHAIN DRIVE TIMING

Post by SEABEEINTHEARMY »

I HAVE A L HEAD CHAIN DRIVE ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN RUNNING GREAT. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT JUST SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE SPARK, FUEL. I PULLED THE FRONT ENGINE COVER TO CHECK THE CHAIN, CHAIN IS NOT BROKEN, THE TIMING MARKS ARE LINED UP, THE FLYWHEEL MARKS ARE CORRECT. THE ROTOR SHOULD BE POINTING TO # 1 IN THE DISTRIBUTOR, BUT NOW IT IS POINT TO # 4. (WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS ENGINE RUNNING A FEW MONTHS AGO, WITH THE TIMING MARKS LINED UP, IT DID POINT TO #1) WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED? THE DISTRIBUTOR DOES TURN CCW WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNING OVER.

Your chain may have jumped a few teeth. Is the lower end of the distributor shaft, the top end of the oil pump shaft and the cam drive gear undamaged.

When you say timing marks are lined up, is that with #1 TDC on compression?

I believe those timing marks will match up twice. Once with #1 TDC on compression and once with #4 TDC on compression.
