m38 oil canister

Post by circleburner12 »

I have a early m38, the oil canister is smaller then on mym38a1. I have looked and looked on the forum and google the correct filter for this canister. the canister may be a civilian jeep canister. I don't know what I do know is with all the part numbers I see for this on the web will not fit. oreillys look for willys jeep oil filter and all come back to about the same number. wix 51010, 51006,51100, the hole opening is to small for the filter to slider over the bolt.

any body have the correct filter number? thxs

if im looking over something please inform me. thxs

those fram numbers crossed over to wix 51010. wix 51010 looks to the right height but the opening for the canister bolt is to small.

I do know the fram numbers are correct. The rubber grommets at the
top & bottom center of the filter are tight when sliding over the canister
tube to prevent blow-by.

thought of that, I did put a lot of pressure while trying to slide it on. also the gasket with the 51010 is a lot smaller then the one I have now.theres also no markings on top of the lid for the canister. don't know if its a civvey canister or not.

Mike,

If you don't have a Military junior or a Cuno then you will have to post photos if we are to try and ID it for you.

I have a few oil filter photos in my albums.

Here's three different filters used on the early CJ2A alone.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like I have a Purolator as well. Seeps a little around the top bolt.
Took me three tries at NAPA to get a filter. Almost as fun as finding a belt for the 12 volt alternator conversion.

what is your napa number?

also at the bottom of my canister I found a washer and rubber grommet. that was slid over the bolt. don't know if it came off the old filter or not. per pics of filters that wes posted it shows some grommets on the filters. I cant read the numbers on the filters from the pics also, but all the wix filters ive looked at hasn't got a grommet. thxs

In the interest of not tying up bandspace I usually post the smaller size photo from my albums. All you need to do is go to my album and click on the photo twice and you'll get the largest size and then can read the small print.

My canister is orange, and has only one nut or opening at the top. Instead of a bolt top it has sort of a T-handle jobbie.

The filter I found to fit is NAPA 1006.

Come to think of it, it isn't leaking in the center, it is leaking just below the top. Must be the cover gasket.

i believed napa 1006 crosses over to a wix 51006, which ive tried. i did find a wix 51080 that suppose to fit a cj2 or cj3 canister. but it doesnt have a rubber grommet like the filters wes posted. may not need the grommet but not sure. thxs
