I began rebuilding my engine yesterday and hit a snag as soon as the valves were in - 3 intake valve tappets and 1 exhaust valve tappet were rotating as I cycled the cam. Previously when I disassembled the engine, I spun the block over after removing the cam and dumped all the tappets on the floor. In addition, I suspect the intake/exhaust valves and their associated parts make have been mixed up while at the machine shop.
While the intake and exhaust valves are back in the right place, I can't be sure the springs, spring retainers, and spring locks weren't mixed up and the tappets were anybody's guess until I saw the wrong valves rotating. Before I try to set things straight, I wanted to confirm a few things:
1)I thought I read that the rotator exhaust valves used a special spring retainer and lock, while the actual valve spring was the same. Is there a difference? If so. what visual cues will allow me to match the proper 4 spring retainers and locks with the rotating tappets? I didn't notice any differences when assembling yesterday.
2)Does it matter? I understand that the rotating valves are no longer made and if I were to replace valves today, no exhaust valves would be rotating anyhow.
This engine will see sunday drives, light use, and a lead additive. Thanks in advance.
