Springs, Are these Correct or Not...

Need a set of military springs for my M-38A1; somewhere down the line a civilian set was installed...

Would these be correct for the jeep...

I've bought quite a few parts from him - he knows what he's selling. Good price on nos springs. I have a pair of front nos ones that I was wanting to trade for nos rears, but haven't had any takers on that deal yet.

Mat,

Post some photos of the front NOS ones you have. I noticed he's selling a MCS4301UT Dodge M37 starter as a M38 Starter, So he's not always spot on with his item ID's. I sent him a question on that and listed the correct PN's for him and I see he removed the item from auction today.

Here is the story I was told about those springs.

The original spring manufacturer listed in the parts manual went out of business at some point in the late '50's or early '60's.

The government and or Willys (not sure which or both) in the late '50's or early 1960's had to contract with another spring manufacturer who had their own style of spring shape as their stock material. The groove was designed to hold grease so the springs could move against each other although I have only ever seen these used dry.

Since they were a replacement spring done apparently on a budget there was no attempt to duplicate the originals and this is why they look like this.

My 1962 USMC Willys M38A1 uses this spring style as original equipment even though they are technically a replacement spring

I bought 4 of these springs last year and put 2 of them on my 'a1. I had to replace the bushings and sand/repaint them of course. Some of the original paint is still on them. One of the pair I still have left has the toe tag on it (unreadable of course). As I said previously, I would love to trade these for a pair of NOS rears for my 'a1.

I, personally, have always gotten what was advertised - whether 100% accurate for my 'a1 or not. Hopefully he is not getting slack in his selling techniques to get rid of his products!
