Willys Engine that starts with the letter U?

A friend has a rolling chassis with a Willys L-134. The serial number on the boss above the water pump is U96715. Can someone tell me about what year this might be. Having trouble finding numbers starting with a U. The tub that was on it is a 1944 MB 9-18-44, serial number 371663. It also has a Willys Overland Cab Closure with the M38 straight windshield frame. Just trying to figure out what he has.
