I found an engine on kijiji up here in the north that is from a pre WW2 Willys.
just wondering how different this engine is than the L-134 engine found in the M38?
The ad says it was running when pulled but I know not to trust those statements. What should I look for if I go and check it out in person?
here is pics of Engine

That is for a prewar Willys car. There are many similarities just as there are many internal and external differences. I would only choose that engine as a last ditch choice. If you can get it cheap enough you could offer it for sale to the pre-war Willys restorers. It would probably sell very quickly further south.
A few diffs:
Different crank and rods
different valve timing
different oil pump/distributor drive system (they are pinned together from inside the sump.
The ignition timing is run 5 Deg ATDC.
Different water pump.
Different front mount plate.
Different intake and carb.

Actually the head in the 1935 engine photo with only 2 bolts in coolant thermostat housing, is the same head used on the Willys MA produced in 1941.

Willys MA & pre-war casting # 637014 (Possibility early MB Slat Grills may have used this head) This hasn't been proven yet.
The 1941 & on MB's both the 25,000 or so Slat grill units & the remaining 300,000 or so stamped steel grill units used the later heads.

Stamped steel grill MB

Willys MB early-war (1941-42) casting # 639660 or 639660C No Willys or Jeep cast on head

Willys MB mid-war (1942-44) casting # 639660C with Willys cast on head (ICO Carl Marcotte)

Willys MB late-war (1944-45) casting # 639660C Willys and Jeep cast on head
