Deciphering a Rebuild Tag

Hi guys, I've pulled this tag off my carb. I couldn't locate a Rosetta Stone for interpreting the info. It's a bit difficult to read, but this is what I see:

Above the line: on the vertical it looks like either "10" or "TO"...on the horizontal it reads 71SS

There are 4 boxes below the line:
- 1st = a punched trumpet shape
- 2nd = stamped M 8 2
- 3rd = a punched, upside down spade
- 4th = empty

Can anyone help me understand this?

Mike is the tag off a YS950S Carter?

Hi Wes, here are a couple pictures of the carb. Carter WE. Is that enough info?

Looks like a Chevy or Hudson carb. The tag should have had at least 3 numbers to the left of the SS. You should probably run it by one of the classic carb shops.

These are some of the WE series Carters: Applications: carb #s = 532S 627S 661S-SA 715S 730S 989S 2108S 2190S 2417S

Would the military have put that carb on? Guessing not. Now that I relook at the rebuild tag, what I thought was "SS" is probably "5S", making the number "715S". I'll get a carb shop to have a look.

No. That was a civvy add-on when the owner at the time was too intimidated with the military YS950S carb. I would look for a carb meant and metered to be on a F134 engine. The easiest two choices are the original military YS950S or a civvy YF with main jet in the 0.090 range. Like YF-938SD & YF-4002-S (w/out emission controls), YF-4366-S, YF-4941-S & YF-6115-S (w/emission controls).
