OK I'm trying to build a drive shaft set up for the M38 Ramsey winch.
Now, I have a complete drive shaft with all the UJs and hanger bearings, slider etc from an ramsey ex. m606/A1 or may-be A2 but I need to convert this to slimline UJs. I can buy various slimline UJs from my local bearing services shop.
Some of which look no stronger than a 1/2 inch squre drive socket set uj!
Now I've checked my TMs and I've looked at the pictures here in the down load area and I can't figure out what the maximum diameter of the slimline uj used is.
I think I'm best off using the maximum diameter that I can get away with and I guess Willys had the same idea but it still needs to clear.
So can anybody tell me the max diameter of the slimline UJ used? then I can figure out my clearances and fit etc.
My next question is what kind of torque is transmitted along this shaft (I see there is no shear pin to give me a clue) as I can imagin that being a question I'll be asked at the parts counter. No point in buying half a dozen only to find they work as weak shear pins every time the winch line is strained.
My last question, looking at my books I can't see how the winch is protected from being overloaded in the M38 or even the doner M606/A1 (other than spinning a UJ) my Ramsey from the 606 is the 200 series but mechanically looks like it works exactly the same as the 50. I'd have expected a shear pin in the line some place.
Thanks,
Dave.

Hi Dave
The diameter of the slim ujoints is 1.25 inches. If I remember the shafts ar .75 in. You cant equate the load the winch is capable of pulling to the drive shafts. They are very low load compared to the winch. The mechanical advantage is gained between the worm gear and the main drive gear of the winch. That is why you can easily turn the input shaft and rotate the winch drum but you cant turn the winch drum and rotate the input shaft.
The main drive gear is keyed onto the main shaft that carries the drum. If the winch stalls it will shear this key. Ive done it unintentionally on an 8000 lb Ramsey Knockoff and the cable lead chain entered the fairlead and stalled the winch. It makes a big bang then you have a bunch of work to do repairing it.
The CV-32 parts book has exploded views of all the componants.

Steve,
Do you know where I can get a copy of the CV-32 parts book in paper or PDF? Aren't there two books. An early that only covered the M38 and M38A1CDN1's and then a late all included one?

Hi Wes
The only two I have seen are the following. I have a copy of the july 1957 version which is before the second contract which was the CDN2's. I do not know if they just ammended this manual for the differences with the CDN2 and CDN3 models or published another book.
I will make you a copy if you wish. Mine is a loose leaf copy I bought from Alex Blair through Maple Leap up.
