BO brake light with signals

In previous posts and in photos reference is made on how to mount an additional small light on the right rear for BO brake light function with turn signals.

All of the photos I've seen are of an M38A1 with solid rear. Also, the bracket supplied with the kit I've seen offered on Ebay bolts to the light mount for the rear three bulb lamp.

All of these options would appear to push that light out into the rounded corner of the M38, or in the case of the bracket, looks to be a surface mount for another vehicle.

Are there some more photos or details on how one would mount that additional lamp on an M38?

It's pushed out there to clear the spare tire. The presence of a tailgate on the M38 and a filler panel on the M38A1 has nothing to do with the light installation.

The installation came in kit form for upgrading all M series trucks to turn signals. MWO 9-2300-263-20 details the kit installation.

I have looked at them a lot Wes.

It appears on the M38 an L-shaped bracket is bolted through the sheetmetal just to the right of the right main lamp and the BO light is bolted to that bracket. All but the wiring is on the exterior of the vehicle sheetmetal.

In other words no holes are cut in the sheetmetal for the light housing.

Does that make sense? Otherwise the light mounting bracket spot welded behind the sheetmetal won't allow you to mount the additional light next to the main light.

If that is correct it makes sense and is an easy install. Just drill three holes to the right of the main lamp, make the L-shaped bracket, bolt the lamp to it, and the bracket to the outside of the body. I guess one could back up the sheetmetal from behind with a piece of plate.

That is exactly what this illustration says except the wire # 23 comes right thru the top hole..

b. 4 thru b. 6 explain this in detail.

The big hole gets a rubber grommet and the wire # 23 no longer used in the right main tail light assy. No doubler is needed behind these holes.

The 7019195 "L" bracket is illustrated in figure 1.

Or you could just mount a left rear light housing w/ brake light in place of the right rear housing. Run a jumper wire over from the left brake light circuit to the right.

Thanks for clarifying that Wes. I might put a backing plate in there anyway as it is just 18 gauge sheetmetal. Bubba knocking that lamp with something on the way by might create some damage.

SKy, with turn signals that is exactly what you do. You use a left light in place of the right to give you a three lamp function.

The additional light is for the black out stop lamp function that you eliminated when you converted the rear lights to turn signals.
