OK, so I have a couple of issues that I need suggestions for fixing. First, the windshield 'latches' appear to be large door hinges. I'm just going to assume thats an 'aftermarket mod'. Is it feasible just to buy the latches and install them?
Then, one of the hinges is pulling loose from the body of the jeep. Any suggestions on how I might fix this? I was thinking of putting a metal strap under the body and bolting it to that. I'm thinking the strap needs to be as wide and long as possible so it can get as much surface area on the body as possible.

There should be two weld nuts on the backside of the tub cowl extension. Have they pulled out or has the skin cracked and pulled out? I would take that lower hinge off and repair that section of cowl skin as necessary.
That's one way to do it! Actually not a bad idea for a latch, just no adjustment! I wonder if the mounting points for the original latches are still there under the barn door hinges?

That's what i need suggestions for. The nuts have pulled through the cowl and i don't know how to shore that up so i can re-attach. I was thinking maybe a small steel plate to run the bolts through and distribute the tension, but I've really no idea if that would work. New territory for me. [/quote]
Overall its in pretty good shape as far as i can tell. In TX, cars made before 1960 get a lot of leeway. The only things i had to do to pass inspection were add wipers and add a tag light (light for rear license plate). One of the PO's removed the emergency brake, it had no seat belts, and no blinkers. None of that is required pre-1960. Heck, only one tail light is required believe it or not.
I really hate the tag light. Added the blinkers because i almost got rear ended - nobody pays attention to the hand signals, and added seat belts. Understanding there are two schools of thought with the belts, but the roll bar is massive so I'm betting on the belts being the way to go.
Now i just have to keep the windshield from popping me in the head going down the road and ill feel about as safe as I'll ever feel in it...
They use two rods, one one on each side that attach to the windshield frame and the front bow.
Just cut you a couple of 3/8 rods and attach them to the rod connection spot on the windshield at each corner, then attach them to the roll bar. Make them removable and you should be set.
That would brace the windshield and keep it from whacking you in the head.

I lived in Florida in the 60's and they would make a turn for McCoy
AFB near our place. Impressive then, but that one at the gate
at Dyess gives pretty good access!
That left lean is actually factory as the engine/tranny and transfer
case are mounted a little left of centerline to make room for
the front driveline.
