Choke & throttle & fording knobs

I was just asked this question and I will ask it here as well.

Were the knobs originally Plastic or metal?

Fording and throttle T handles were metal. Choke was plastic.

On that topic, can the old handles be transferred to new cable or are they sealed together?

As I read it, the M38 came with round throttle knobs
but it was common practice to replace them with the t handles.

Is that correct?

On my 51 M38 throttle and fording were metal T handles, choke was plastic knob.

It would be interesting to hear from someone familiar with the
Factory Restoration class.

Motor pool my guess is either works.

No doubt about those two, they look to be round.

Yes Chuck that was a typo on my part. The ready to ship M38
has to handle.

Wonder if they changed to t handles later in the manufacturing
run as that is a later M38.

There are many sources showing two round knobs:

Here in the late M38 service manual TM 9-8012

Here in the early service manual TM 9-804 SEP 1950

Here in both the 51 & 55 ORD 9 G-740

Here in the 55 ORD 9 SNL G-740 but these numbers remain the same in the 51 ORD 9, the 53 ORD 7 SNL G-740, & the 56 ORD 8 SNL G-740

The "T" handled throttle control does not appear until the M38A1 ORD 9 SNL G-758 but part numbers for both are entirely different from the M38.

or if it was a replacement with the same number if no substitute

The M38A1 throttle "T" handle is longer so it would probably work as a sub but the Army supply system doesn't sub it to the M38.

However , if you search deep enough the original 7375115 ORD# & 2540-737-5115 FSN evolves to this change in 1963:
