M38 Fuel Filler Neck
1952 Willys M38 #65666, 24 Volt. I was about to order a new gas tank for my M38. Does anyone know if the filler neck is available for purchase? I'm not seeing them anywhere. I don't want to spend $400 plus if I can't get the correct filler neck to go with the tank. The tank I have now is not an original M38 tank. It fits well, but does not have the wide filler neck.

The correct M38 tank is much larger capacity than the CJ small filler tank you now have. You should not try finding a largew filler and try adapting it to the smaller civvy tank. The grief will just grow!
Shop til you find a complete M38 tank new or used. If you go repop you will have grief with the angle of the filler pipe versus the location of the tub opening.

Thanks for the heads up, Wes. There is nothing wrong with the tank currently on the jeep other than I can't use a sending unit with it. I ran out of gas a couple of weeks ago and had a knee jerk. I don't want to create any new problems. I'll just have to take an extra 20 seconds out of the day and visually check the fuel level. I have read nothing but negative commits about the M38 replacement tanks. Thanks for saving me the headache.

Fuel tank
I picked up a repro tank from Ron Fitzpatrick a few years back. It is well made of tern coat steel. The fittings were all correct to make it a bolt-in with an NOS sender. The drain fit properly in the floor, the filler neck fits very well into the side. It takes the original filler extension and fuel cap. This tank was not a nightmare. There are small details that differentiate it from original.
There was a small price premium over some of the others. Ask Ron if he still carries them.

May I ask what year civvy tanks fit under the M38 seat and line up with the filler hole on the side of body? I'm not looking for a perfect restoration so only need a tank that will fit in current tank location. I'm going 12v with this Jeep so could use same sending unit used on the civvy tank that fits.
Thanks
Brad

Brad,
Mine had an early CJ tank although it appears there are slight
variations. It fit in the hole but the po filled the gap with flat
rubber gasket material.
Be advised you'll have to cut additional holes or enlarge what is
there in the floor as the civvy tank has a drain fitting as well
as the fuel suction fitting on the bottom. The M38 tank only
has the drain plug fitting. You'll also have to run your fuel supply
to that bottom fitting.
Take care,
Brian

Southpw, the 46 thru 53 CJ2A & CJ3A should all fit. To look nice you should get the civvy filler neck filler plate. As Brian said all fuel plumbing is on the bottom of the civvy tanks. You will have to experiment with different rubber strip thicknesses under the tank to center the filler neck.
