M38 King Pin End Caps

Post by Tembek »

My end caps didn't have any shims (and the bearing cones had indentations under each roller - although that may have nothing to do with it).

Are there two types of end caps? Those that need shims and those that don't?

Are there any markings or measurements I can make to confirm. I'm thinking over the years my M38 has ended up with a mix of older and newer (CJ) parts.

Thanks for any help guys,

Jim

Yes there are three types of end caps (actually they are called "Drive Flanges") but that has nothing to do with shims. The shims are used with the axle assembly that calls for their use only.

The mix and match by folks not knowing what they were doing lead to a ton of axles out there that are not set up correctly. The important details are in the book!

Thanks Wes. I was actually talking about the King Pins. Neither side had any shims under the end caps (pin caps). I read somewhere that there was a newer version that had a longer pin or shoulder that alleviated the need for shims.

By the way, the CJ service manual is very helpful. Do you know where I can download one complete?

Thanks,

Jim

The old front axles, CJ2A and older, had one of the caps include the steering arm. The CJ manual explains the difference. Those with the taller lower cap boss shim only the top.

I have been slowly working the CJ manual a chapter at a time. Eventually I will get the whole manual copied then PDF it.

Try googling "jeep service manual pdf" or "jeep SM-1002 service manual pdf"
