starter bolts

Post by eagle64 »

As I'm starting to reassemble my m38, and after tagging and bagging just about anything that fits in a baggy (for bolts). I found I'm missing one of the starter bolts. The bottom one is a 1/2" but the top one is in a blind hole. I'm guess that it would be another 1/2" bolt, but I don't know if it is a fine thread or course and how long. the length I can use a smaller bolt and check the length.
anyone know what size and type bolt for the top of the starter?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Early starters used 3/8 bolts and late starters used 1/2 bolt. Since you are talking 1/2" bolts I'll assume you have the late starter.

If you look in your M38 parts manual ORD 9 SNL G-740 page 140 at the top you will see the late starter listed for engines after serial 74419. Below it are a list of attaching parts.

Bolt, Machine, hex-hd, S, cd or zn-pltd, 1/2-13NC-3x1 1/4 qty 1 ea.
Nut, Self-locking, hexagon, S, cd or zn-pltd, 1/2-20NF-3 qty 1 ea.
Screw (Translates to bolt), cap, hex-hd, S, cd or zn-pltd, 1/2-20NF-3x3 1/2 qty 1 ea.
