M38A1 motormount brackets

I have and early tilt grill M38A!. The motor is an F head willys and when In tried to mount it and the tranny/transfere case the whole string tilted to the left and the transfer case did't line up. I looked in the manuel and it looked like the correct mounting brackets and I put the long one on the passenger side and the short on the drivers side. The front mounting plate has the two mounting holes facing backward while the manuel looks like one forward and one facing backward. There appears to be another set of mounts with my pile of parts and they have some sort of swivel rod on them. Did the early M38A1 have a different style than what is shown in the manuel?

You have used a CJ front plate, and it will not work properly with the 38 or A1. Right leg goes back, left leg goes forward. The only option!

The swivel rods are radiator supports. As John mentioned you have an earlly pre 1952 civvy front mount plate on the engine. You'll have to pull her out and remove the lower pulley, timing cover, timing gears and swap in a Late M38 or A1 mount plate. The left mount ear was turned forward to accommodate the larger fuel/vacuum pump.


The bars labeled P and S in this drawing slide into receptacles at the lower side of the radiator and then the other end of the rod slips in the corresponding engine mount rubber base.

This is the correct front mount plate for the late M38 L134 and all M38A1 F134's.


This is the civvy front plate with the left ear facing aft.
