Movie jeep -what is it?

Post by 4x4M38 »

Watching Firestarter.
They escape in a red/orange CJ5 or appears to be.
Obviously a CJ5/M38A1 model - rounded fenders, large battery box
cover, later windshield...

However, that battery box cover has screws. Not spot welded
like the civvy version. Has an opening for a tailgate, opening is
there but no tailgate. Civvy top. Did not get a good look at the
left side, indent in the right lower cowl, fording cutout is missing
the cover, blackout lamp on left fender.

A1 dash, grill, frame, tub & windshield looks A1 as well. Battery box cover is a poor hand fabricated replacement.

I'm sure the owner didn't mind renting out his Jeep to be in a movie though. I'm sure he made good cash. I know a friend who rented his Jeep out for a tv show and was paid $500a day for 3 days. Easy $1500..... CDN funds that is so worth only about $200 US :?

A friend runs a movie rental business that specializes in military vehicles.

It's really amazing what movie scenic artists can do to transform a vehicle!

I doubt it was ever an M38A1C. The rear quarters still have their tops above the wheel houses. It's just an A1 with a tailgate cut. The tub & sheet metal is A1 and the frame certainly appears to be boxed up front.
