actually on my Frankenjeep is a CJ2A gearbox working…now a got an original M38 gearbox which is sandblastet. I got it for an good price but now I need a little help and have different questions.
First thing is: Which parts are missing on the top and at the end?
Can someone give me some pictures of the missing parts? The thing is that on my CJ gearbox the cabling is coming out of the steering column…this is on an M38 resolved in another way..so my question is: Will the cable of the hornbutton go through the little hole at the end of the gearbox (botton)? Hope you guys understand what I mean…? I know I need some missing parts before I can change and install the original handlebars…hopefully waiting for your support...

In the "Downloads" section of this website you will find the M38 parts manual where you can study diagrams with information on parts of all the systems on your M38. From what I can see the only parts missing is the horn button switch that screws into the bottom of the steering gear and the rod and button that goes from the top down to the switch. And the steering wheel, nut and rubber horn button cover, of course. While you have it out of the Jeep you might want to take the cover off the steering gear and examine the worm and sector shaft for wear. You can set up the proper pre-load on the sector shaft as well. Refer to the M38 Maintenance Manual for details (Downloads section).
The CJ2A used a power wire routed up through the steering box and column and then had a horn button that grounded the power lead. The M38 has the power wire outside and below the steering gear box and the switch is mounted to the bottom of the gear box and then the switch is actuated by the horn button on the wheel which pushes a long rod down through the column & gearbox to the bottom mounted switch.
As much as I can see the cabling is going through the box in that thin tube...I´m asking because mine seems blocked...maybe because of a cable rest....? I don´t understand how the connection works from the horn cable to the switch contact at the end of the gearbox...where do I have to connect the cable from the horn button?
Now I want to describe my misunderstanding. I did not realize that the M38 horn-switch works mechanically with a stick made of bronze. I thought the thing is working via cabeling like the WW2 and CJ models. A friend of mine was updating me...
