Steering Box Horn Tube Swaged in?

Post by Jeff_Lee »

I am rebuilding my '51 M38 steering box, that was quite mangled inside, and had water and rust. I have all new shaft, sector, bushes, bearings, seals and cups. I have fully disassembled the box, and removed the bottom horn switch.
Lodged in the bottom of the box is the "Tube, oil seal w/horn switch adapter".
I have lightly tapped on the tube from the horn switch side, and it is not coming out. How is it retained in the box - is it swaged in place? I cannot find any guidance in the Power Train and Frame manual... mine might simply be rusted in place??

Before I put more BFH force on the part, is there a recommended way to remove this tube w/o damaging it?

Thanks Jeff

Jeff,

It's been awhile but I usually didn't remove that adapter unless it was damaged. Let me see what I can find. The Ross manual doesn't address it.

Also your email address is bouncing the automated emails to you from our web site.

Horn switch adapter

The adapter is a press fit into the bottom of the gear case.
You can grab it with a vise grips, turn and pull. It will come out.

Thanks John - just to confirm, that would push out thru the box, right. Said another way, I should press up thru the horn adapter hole?

Its a press fit and when you re-insert a bit of sealant will help stop any leakage. I used a little Permatex #2.

Great! OK, I will try to knock it thru the box with a deep socket.

Thanks for the advice,
Jeff
