M38 fuel tank liner

Post by regor »

I am curious to know if anyone has had the experience I have at the moment with my fuel tank.

Obviously when the tank was made there was a liner of some sort sprayed into the tank. It is coming apart and pealing. Has anyone used some method to remove this liner and what did you use after you removed the liner to secure the inside of the tank?

Thanks, regor

Used POR15 in tanks and fuel cans. The cans and tanks were rusty, so I had no problem with the liner. The POR15 worked OK (so far).

Regor,
As supplied the tanks were bare steel. Somebody put a liner
in your tank somewhere down the road

There are two camps about liners.

Those that support clean, bare steel with proper care and fuel
types

And those that support a liner of some sort.

Bare steel will rust eventually if the tank is left empty or a lot less then full all of the time. This is the only bad issue with bare steel.

Liners all have one thing in common. Professionally applied they will last many years. Amateur applications seldom insure good adhesion and eventually they start peeling. Usually in less than 3 or 4 years.

My advice is always the same on this topic. Cut the tank open, clean it properly removing all traces of rust and /or liner coatings. Weld it closed and treat the tank correctly. keep it full when in storage and it will last another half century!
