Another torque spec question

Post by southpw »

I'm ready to put the PTO cover back onto my D18 after rebuild. Both the D18 transfer cases Itook apart had a loose fit nut holding the gear in place on the shaft that comes from the T90 transmission. I have since read that this nut should be torqued but the threads do not say to what specs. Any input on a torque value for this bolt? Thanks
Brad

This is a case where the Tech writers dropped the ball. TM 9-1804B refers you to the early M38 Ops manual TM 9-804 for installing the trans to the tranny but they fail to mention the torque. Then TM 9-8012 that replaced TM 9-804 makes no mention of the nut at all. What I suggest each time we are left hanging by the Military TM's to just pick up the applicable civvy manual. In this case SM-1002 covers this quite well.

Thanks Wes. I'm glad I asked. I assembled it finger tight as that's how they were on my units. I will torque it down correctly today and get the cover on.
