M38 vs M38A1 fuel pickup

Post by brimac »

Is the only difference between the M38 fuel pickup and the M38A1 is the the pickup tube and filter? Local guy has a M38A1pick up for sale. I was thinking of just cutting it down if the bolt pattern is the same for the fuel tanks ....

Both use the same filter element and gasket and screws. So reasonably thinking your plan to shorten should work. You may have an issue with orientation of the external pickup tube that attaches to the top of the Filter/vent assy.

Pickup differences

Post by G740 »

They will not interchange. The M38 uses a 1/4" fuel line and the A1 uses 5/16". The fitting is not the same on the top of the plate.

The difference in tubing size is not a tough issue to resolve. Reducer unions and bushings can solve that.

More importantly I would not waste time modifying a unit to fit when dealers like John offer new replacements at reasonable prices.
