How far does the oil fill tube extend out of the engine block on an M38 L head engine? In order to get correct dip stick depth into oil pan ? Many THANKS

You can never be 100% sure of the answers you get to this question. Lacking a stamped part number on the tube you cannot be absolutely certain which tube you have.

The way I have dealt with this issue is to use the tube I have and start with an empty oil pan and the jeep on level ground. Put 2 qts of oil in the sump. Start with a dipstick that can reach far enough to gage those 2 qts. Now file a notch in the stick at the 2 qt level. Add one qt a time and notch the dip stick at the new level each time. This will leave you with three notches at the 2qt, 3 qt, & 4 qt levels.
