Which gun mount for a 1919A4

Post by Dee »

Want to mount a .30 in my M38A1. Which pedestal and cradle do I need for it?

Correct pedestal is the M31C with the E10014 Cradle (pintle) assy.

Has anyone ever gotten pictures from the underside of the M38 showing the M31A1's under-body supports? I have yet to come across any and would be interested.

Jordan,
The M38 and M38A1 used different underbody supports.

I believe the drawings Wes linked below show the underbody brackets for the M38 tripod..

The A1's were welded, whereas the M38 M31a1's were reinforcements that bolted through the tub and to the tripod on top, and one edge sat on the top of the frame rails.

If I remember correctly.

Take care,

Jordan & Brian,

This should clear up differences related to which frame you are using.

I included more detail in this photo which clear things up as well.

Have you thoroughly reviewed the photos, parts manuals and the magazine article I listed above. Views of all the parts are there for both the M38 and the M38A1. Granted there may not be complete nicely edited photos of each piece from under each jeep but I have always found an adequate view to help explain each part to new owners. The links I posted to my weapon carrying sub-album clearly show the difference between the M38 and M38A1 mounting and bracing.

I know the MWO can be difficult to follow because the parts illustrations do not have display indexes. You can use the 1979 manual TM 9-1005-245-14 parts list to resolve any mystery.

The parts pages (4 ea) that are keyed to these two illustrations (C-11 & C-12) will make things more understood.

Thanks Wes.

The two outrigger brackets look pretty easy. It might take Bretto
to figure out how to replicate that center support!

For my M38A1 I have a M31C mount and a 30/50 cradle. The cradle works for either a 30 cal or 50 cal MG. When I attached the mount to the tub, there were small dimples in the sheet metal showing where to drill for the mounting bolts - very handy!
