Need Patent plate info/Date

Post by Dee »

I'm in a dilemma and would like your opinion on titling my M38A1. After doing research on these jeeps I have come to the fact that I don't have a clue what yr model my Jeep is. I'm ready to send off and get a title for it and don't know what yr to put on the title. I got some original '53 data plates w the Jeep. The data plates on the Jeep are reproductions that haven't been stamped. The Patent plate which I am almost certain is original is a double number which indicates that it's marine corp. If I had information on Patent plate numbers to determine a yr I could use it to come up w a production date.
My Patent plate has 57148 89051.

57148 falls between an August 1953 unit and a September unit.

It could be the patent plate is original.

Easy Brian!

The 57148 is the model. The serial is 89051 which is a May or Jun 1963 USMC unit.

Wes thank you. So I guess I need to title it as a '63 model. I'm almost positive the Patent plate hasn't been messed w.

Do you have a bill of sale or old title with the serial 89051 or 57148 89051?

No title. I have a bill of sale but I can have the guy redo it. State of Ms is very lenient on this stuff. All you need to get a title for something is two bill if sales.

If you plan on properly stamping new dash plates then only use the 89051. If
Miss. requires the standard VIN's they may assign a number.

A short history on VIN's.

1 - The beginning till 1954 whatever number or format the manufacturer used for chassis and engine serial numbers were used on titles. Some states used the chassis or body serial and some used the engine serial.

2-1951 thru 1981 Any VIN the factory used was fine. These new VIN's included the serial number plus several other tidbits of information like factory or body style etc.

3- In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format.[1] It required all on-road vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the letters I (i), O (o), and Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).

Try to maintain the 89051 serial on the patent plate & dash plate. If Miss issues an assigned VIN tag try to keep it separate. I would mount it below the Patent plate.

Here's a link to Miss's antique classic registration requirements. Seems they do issue an assigned VIN but I found no mention of how or if any VIN plate is added to the vehicle.

Wes they won't assign me a vin. It will be no problem using the 89051 as my vin.
