Paint backing plates

Post by 4x4M38 »

So there are spots on the inside of the backing plate
where it's suggested to put white lithium grease.
I would think paint would not help there.

Do you not paint any of the inside?

If so would it make sense to put a little white
lithium grease on a rag and rub it in all over then
wipe off as much as possible, then put it on the
required spots? To keep rust down?

I'd think even the slightest bit of grease will
attract dust and dirt.

Suggestions?

Rust is not much better than dust and dirt.

The average backing plates have been painted for many many generations.

Light coatings of various greases have been used on many generations of brake components that move against the backing plates. It is not uncommon nor impractical to coat painted contact areas with very thin films of grease. The paint should of course be oil base or poly and high gloss finish.

I see no reasons for raising any concerns about the paint or the grease. The amount of grease you should use on the contact areas of the backing plate is a film of the grease.

I edited the typo in my post and added a clarification on the type of paint.
