While attempting to install (missing) a heat riser spring limiter, I twisted off the bolt head of the mount bolt. I drilled it out and then attempted to "easy out" it...and #@$%@ if I didn't break the easy out in the hole. See pic.
My question, is what is the worst case scenario if I do not hook up the heat riser? just let the flapper flap or tie the weight one way or another. I wish not to have to purchase new entire intake and exhaust manifolds. The one I have is welded together. Also, living in the south, I don't plan to drive it in the cold months.
You can try heating the broken portion to red with a very small flame
and allow to cool to take the temper out. Then drill with progressively
larger bits until you begin to approach the manifold hole wall.
I think you will have difficulty without a functioning heat riser.
I do not understand why the arse that invented them ever called them "Easy" outs. I do not use them. Any rate the best choice at this point is the trip to a machinist.
In the illustration above that broken fastener needed to be drilled out a bit further so the larger diameter section of the easy out would have been deeper engaged. You should have only half of what is remaining od the bolt thickness in that photo.
The risk in allowing the flapper to bounce around is engine damage and / or loss of power.
Thanks guys...I may try to use the broken easyout and bolt remains to spot weld the spring bracket to the manifold to get it installed. then at a later date when the rebuild is complete and I come across some extra cash, I'll replace the two manifolds. I'll spend my money now on the much needed missing parts...gas tank, alternator, starter, oil filter assy, radiator, etc.
At least you can carry to the machine shop and get it pulled out. John
