Throw out bearing

Just a question, does the throw out bearing spin when set up properly? I have about an 1 inch play.

I mean to say when it's neutral or in gear. I know it suppose to turn while it's engaged while shifting or holding in the clutch.

Rusty,
When the pedal is pushed in the clutch disc is disengaged from the flywheel
by the throwout bearing pressing on the fingers of the pressure plate.

The throwout bearing only spins when you push it against the rotating fingers.

You should have clearance between the fingers and the throwout bearing with
the clutch engaged and the pedal up all the way.

The manual specifies IIRC 1-1/8" free play of the pedal until the bearing starts
to contact the fingers. You should have a gap between the fingers and bearing
as well. I don't remember the distance, but it's here in another thread. 1/8"
minimum?

The easiest way to destroy a throwout bearing is drive around with your
left foot on the clutch pedal, putting just enough pressure on it to keep
the throwout bearing spinning all the time.

Yes you can do that but that is just a check. Proper set up starts with the pedal to cross shaft rod length, making sure all holes are not worn out of
round, all mounts are tight, clutch cable is the proper length, then setting the pedal free play adjustment. All of that should result in the proper clearance
between the bearing and the clutch fingers.

If you don't have any clearance and the bearing is riding on the fingers
then something i listed above is incorrect. Or the yoke may not be seated properly on the ball. Or, well you get the idea.

So I'd check your pedal free play first. Then pull the inspection plate
and see if the bearing has clearance. If not, follow your manuals and
start at the pedal and work your way back and around the linkages.

While you have your nose in that inspection window make sure the bearing has a spring pulling it towards the tranny!

This photo is a reminder to disconnect the spring when pulling the tranny.

Probably late in the discussion but what started your question?
Did you just install a new clutch or throwout, or rebuilt tranny?

Or did something just start acting up after working fine for awhile?

Yes. my TOB seized up and started squealing, from other vehicles I've owned I knew what it was. Pulled it apart and noticed the 3 little bolts were worn down a little. So I replaced the bolts and TOB and started the process to get it back to work. Just reading, some TOBs were made to ride the fingers. So I was just wondering. I do have the spring hooked up pulling towards the tranny. It shifts and works great. Thanks.

3 little bolts? Sounds like you have a HD 9-1/4" Rockford pressure plate. Here's a pic of the one in my 3A.

Another issue. In several posts I've seen reference to packing the throwout
bearing like you would before installation.

NO

NO they are pre-lubed and not re-lubeable. Grease references are primarily about the face of the bearing and the groove of the bearing.
