I'm attaching the new hood welting on my M38 radiator guard. The welting was pretty much missing when I got the jeep so I have nothing to go by. I have a few questions:
1. Is there a specific way that the split leg rivets are installed? I was just going to use a flat bladed screwdriver to bend the legs over.
2. Were the rivet legs flattened down to hold the welting tight or just installed loosely?
3. There are about four 2 inch long spots along the top of the radiator guard where it looks like there was some kind of double sided tape or sealant applied, is this correct? I don't see any mention of this in ORD 9.
Any comments will be appreciated. Marty

1.You can buy a tool to install the rivets or make your own. I made one a few years ago by milling 2 - 3/16" grooves in a piece of 1/4" thick x 3/4" wide flat stock. I cut it approx. 1" long. Then I tack welded this piece to the lower jaw of a pair of vice grips. You will also need either a piece of brass or plastic to protect the head of the rivet.
2.Squeeze the jaws and the rivet is properly rounded over to the grill flange. I have seen where others start splitting the rivet with a screwdriver, but I didn't have to do that.
3.I haven't seen double sided tape or sealant used. The welting is asphalt coated - maybe that is what you are seeing?
I am at the point of installing new welting on my new Jeep now. The problem is - I removed the piece from the vice grips and have misplaced it. I guess I will have to make a new one for this job too!

A very quick search gets:

Much more and pics available, too, with a little more work.
