M-38 oil filter bracket

Post by layne »

Is there a way to tell the difference of the Oil filter support bracket (the one that attaches to the head) between the CUNO and Fram type oil filters. My M-38 has a bracket, but no oil filter. The engine was replaced by the PO, but it is not military (no MC on the SN). The brackets have different part numbers in the parts manual, so I assume they are different. Are they interchangable? I want to get an oil filter but need to know the differences in the mounting bracket so I know which one to look for. Acording to the manual I should use the Fram style for my M-38 SN 53XXX , Correct?

Thanks for your help

All production M38's used the Cuno filter. The serial number cutoffs are incorrect in the parts manual. Both brackets bolt to the head the same way. The Cuno bracket only has two mount holes in the side of the bracket. The Fram (military junior) has four (an upper pair and a lower pair) since it is taller and has two straps.
