1951 M38 Reflector gaskets

I have 5 original Stimsonite reflectors on my 51 M38. I have disassembled them and the restoration process is progressing well. I have a question. The reflectors contain a gasket that I can not determine what material was used. It does not appear to be rubber or cork.
Does any one have first hand knowledge or know a reference source that states what material was used??

I believe they are a rubber gasket, reddish in colour.
